Why Being Delusional Might Be Your Best Trait

If you want to create something bold and noteworthy, something that will naturally command attention, you’re going to need a vision for it; a dream of what’s possible.

Sometimes that dream might even feel unrealistic. Far-fetched. Delusional.

If you are committed to this vision, if you have the right structure and support, if you are dedicated, if you show up consistently over time, and if you trust your inner compass, you can create things that might have once been unimaginable or thought to be pure fantasy.

Sometimes, it’s enough to hold the vision and be disciplined in your commitment to show up and do the work.

That said, let's keep it real:

Your commitment to showing up consistently and your steadfast holding of the big dream won't always prevent you from getting stuck along the way.

Sticking Points in the Creative Process

There are times during the creative process when you might start to believe the nay-sayers who tell you that you’re delusional; that what you see as possible is really just a fantasy.

You might be inclined to heed the voices that tell you to pack it in and get back to reality.

When those sticking points arise, it can help to find a new angle. Change your perspective. Find a new approach.

➡️ Maybe the big message that you’ve been trying to share in an article or book isn’t landing because it requires your presence, your passion, and your personality.

Perhaps it would land more effectively if you shared it in your spoken voice, in front of an audience — where people can see and hear you and experience your passion and authenticity firsthand.

➡️ Maybe your TikToks, preview calls, or cover letters aren’t generating traction because you’re trying to follow someone else’s script for “what works.”

Perhaps you need to trust your inner authority and speak from your heart.

➡️ Maybe your business isn’t taking off because you’re trying hard to be a version of whatever you think success looks like.

Perhaps you will get traction when you start working in a way that is better aligned with your rhythms, skills, and talents.

A Small Change Can Change Everything

A small change in approach — a different tool, a new technology, a fresh technique — might be all you need to break through that sticking point and create what you envisioned.

Allow yourself to experiment. Walk away from it and then return. Look at it from different angles.

And as you’re evaluating, notice where you’re giving up your creative power to the inner voices deep in your subconscious that tell you you’re being unrealistic or delusional.

Today’s Delusion is the Reality of the Future

Being “delusional“ or “unrealistic” is not a flaw; it’s a necessary ingredient for innovation and change.

If everyone else could see the possibility of what you’re trying to create, then someone else would have created it already.

Many of the aspects of the “reality” we take for granted today — cars, dishwashers, washing machines, unlimited international calling from a small device that fits into your pocket — were once fantastical visions.

Until everyone else can see it, it’s called fantasy and delusion.

The people who change the world, who create stand-out works of art, who innovate new technologies and business models, are the ones who can see a world that doesn’t yet exist.

They see what other people can’t see.

What Are You Committed to Creating?

In the hands of those who show up to do the work, today’s fantasy becomes tomorrow’s reality.

What are you committed to creating?
